My Sketchbook
Most of my sketches start out very messy. Ideas come to me as I draw. Sometimes my drawings will turn into a finished piece; sometimes they don't. Usually I start out with an idea in my head, and by the time I get to the painting/coloring stage, my illustration has gone a completely different way. I kind of like that, though. It's fun not knowing what things are going to turn out like.
When I get an idea of what I want to draw, I start by making a very rough drawing called a thumbnail sketch. This helps me decide where I want to put everything. Then, I'll usually do a few character sketches. Finally, I'll put everything together in my final drawing, which will be transferred onto my final drawing surface (usually watercolor paper).
